Not only does he face a corpse-infested urban hell, human scavengers, and unending loneliness, but now a new mystery has risen... The undead are disappearing from the streets. A force is gathering, beyond the mountain man's wildest nightmares, even more relentless and terrifying than the roaming tides of dead flesh. And it's preparing to hunt. Mountain Man Volume 1 Keith C Blackmore Books
This is a really great story. The writer is not Nobel Laureate but it damn sure was enjoyable! Just a great story with funny characters who do funny, normal things. I really like the old character Gus...and so will you. One of the things that make this different from all the rest of the Zombie genre is Gus and his buddy Scott are two normal guys - not Delta Force operatives, not trained Rangers, not even LEOs...They are a house painter and a baker but both have something special - a very strong will to survive. No super heroes here. It gives the story a whole different flavor, a colorful realism because they act and talk like real people who get scared and do stupid things and are trying to cope with the end of civilization. So, I have purchased the next two Mountain Man books, money well spent. And, will undoubtedly burn through them as I burned through this one in one day. Lucky for me there is now also a fourth one! Did I say this was a great story? Well...it damn well is. Now, where is that Captain Morgan Rum?Product details

Mountain Man Volume 1 Keith C Blackmore Books Reviews
Mountain man is the first book in a zombie apocalypse trilogy and I want to commend Keith Blackmore on writing some damn entertaining books. The main character Gus is someone most of us can relate to, and even if you're not a drinker, you can certainly relate to why he is and why you probably would be as well. The challenge for the author was to keep this book interesting with very few characters (deadheads not withstanding), and he accomplished that like a pro. It's fast-paced, descriptive, action-packed and scary as all get out, so if you love horror you're going to love this. Read it and thank me later!
Oh, and the dialogue between Gus and Scott is friggin' hilarious and there was one scene that almost made me spit my popcorn out (yes, I eat popcorn sometimes when I'm reading) and had my wife looking at me like I was crazy. I'm not going to spoil it but it was some funny stuff!
My first experience with Keith C. Blackmore came with the reading of his short story THE HOSPITAL (The First Mountain Man Story). It was an okay, 3-star read, but I did enjoy it enough to try this book, the first in the series MOUNTAIN MAN. It's another zombie tale about someone trying to get through a dismal world without becoming zombie fodder. The setting is Annapolis Basin and South Mountain, a Canadian range in Nova Scotia.
If I were only allowed one negative comment, it would have to be the relentless references to alcohol and getting wasted. I understand this guy has no real hope to speak of, just trying to stay alive one day at a time, but the onslaught of booze references got a little tiring. Other than that, and maybe some lagging in the middle, I thought the story line was pretty good. Enough so that I'm going to read Book 2 in the series, SAFARI.
Loved, Loved, Loved this series, the only complaint I have is not one I can share as it will ruin the book for those of you wondering if the book is any good.
This book and the rest of the series which I purchased within two days of each other were pure action set on greased wheels. I loved going into the stores,
going through abandoned homes, killing zombies, and Gus was so down to earth, loved the guy. Writer kept me very entertained and I hope to see more in this
series after Hellifax which I picked up this evening. GREAT BOOK KEITH add more to the series!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Having finished this book in a day it would be hard for me to rate it any less than a five star. It was a gritty, realistic commentary on an end of the world zombie apocalypse two or three years post event. Having looked at some of the other reviews, especially the lower rated ones, I think that last point - it being two or three years post even, was lost on most of them. Having retreated to a viable redoubt, what could be called our anti-hero has spiraled into a place of loneliness, despair, pain, and fear. He has moments of introspection of his family, and the drinking by past men in his family that illuminates for us the true depths of despair he has fallen to, kind of like the bleakness of the landscape outside with the shambling zombies that inhabit the land, and his nightmares. The author hints at a back story of relational pain, both physical and emotional at the time of the apocalypse, and he spreads out the story line of this throughout the first part of the book, but leaves the final telling of it out before the story ends. This is a thread that may or may not be picked up with any future sequels.
The book is definitely a character driven book, not an action book, but we do have times of action to deal with. It starts in the middle of his life where he has sunk to new lows. We see he still has the capacity, despite his drunkenness, to plan, and execute both an immediate and a long term plan. Some have commented that he wouldn't have the capacity to function with his drinking, but I've been around enough heavy drinkers to understand that he could be fully functional. However, we do see him drinking heavily at first, but as he meets and befriends someone, his drinking drops off, and relationship, friendship and the power of human communication becomes a much more effective balm against all that has happened.
While some have not liked the description of many trips to scavenge, I found it fascinating and insightful. It truly was necessary to the story as the main character was able to overcome so much of his fear through his exploits. We see him growing bolder, and seemingly becoming more alert to what's happening around him, teaching and training his new friend in the things he's had to learn the hard way. It was fascinating to look at the things that they found, and what they would leave behind, including their reasons for it. Enlightening, for sure.
While it is a character book, it is also violent and yes, gory at times. However, this lent realism to it. It definitely wasn't unanticipated violence, as this is a zombie book, but the author also didn't go into intimate details of the things zombies do to their victims as some books and TV series, like "The Walking Dead".
The addition of the surprise element at the end was not sprung on us, but was hinted, foreshadowed, and it actually had me wondering right up to the end, what all was happening. The final scenes were eloquently written and I felt like I was there, rooting him on, as he battled for his life. Loved the almost human friendship he allotted to his drinking buddies when he found himself, once again, bereft of the relational elements he had come to enjoy. The book ended on a question mark for me, though it could be a stand alone book. With two or three threads left hanging, it would work itself into a great sequel, and I so hope Mr. Blackmore will provide one for us.
Excellent book. Flawed, maybe, but I think it had to be written in a drawn out expose in order to really help us understand our main character, and help him find the redemption he sought. Mountain Man was a great read and I highly recommend it, but don't expect to feel touchy/feely good about it, or expect to laugh. It's a hard hitting, hard drinking, heavy language type of book, but it's also well written and speaks volumes to the type of thing we might all experience at the zombie apocalypse.
